Passing the Exam: A Study Method That Works

The question pool is public, which changes how you should study. A concrete three-week method, the topics worth genuinely understanding, and test-day tactics.

The amateur radio exams are unusual: every question and every answer choice is published in advance. That single fact should change how you study, and most people ignore it.

It does not mean “memorise 400 questions and learn nothing”. It means you can be surgical — spend your effort on the material that is genuinely load-bearing, and let spaced repetition handle the arbitrary numbers that exist only to be recalled.

The method

1. Take a practice test before studying anything

Cold, on day one. You will score somewhere around 40–55% on Technician purely from general knowledge and elimination. This is not a waste of time — it tells you which of the ten topic groups you are already fine on and which are genuinely foreign. Those are different study problems.

2. Use a spaced-repetition tool, not a book alone

HamStudy.org is the standard recommendation, and deservedly — it tracks per-question confidence and re-serves what you get wrong, on the current pool, free, in a browser or app. The ARRL license manuals are good explanatory companions, but a book alone is a poor drill tool.

The workflow that works: 30–40 minutes a day in the drill tool, and when a question makes no sense, stop and look that one concept up properly before moving on.

3. Cover the pool in sections, not in random order

Study one sub-element at a time until it is solid, rather than shuffling the whole pool from day one. Random-order drilling from the start feels productive and retains badly — you never build a mental model of any single topic, and every session is a fresh cold start on everything.

Roughly a week per third of the pool, then a week of full random drilling to integrate.

4. Stop when you are consistently at 85%

Not 74%. The pass mark is 74% (26 of 35), and people who walk in at exactly the pass mark fail regularly, because the random draw varies. At a steady 85% on full-length random practice tests you have real margin.

Take at least five full-length, random, timed practice exams before the real one. Question-by-question drilling inflates your sense of readiness; full exams don’t.

Three weeks, realistically

Week 1 — rules, operating practice, safety. Mostly memorisation, quick wins, big score movement. Week 2 — electrical principles, components, antennas. The part that needs actual understanding. Week 3 — full random practice exams daily until you are steady at 85%+. Book the session at the start of this week so there is a deadline.

What to genuinely understand vs. what to memorise

Memorising the whole pool is possible and it is a miserable way to spend your time. It also leaves you unable to use the licence. Split the material:

Understand these properly

They recur constantly, they compose with each other, and they are the difference between a licence and an operator.

  • Ohm’s law and the power formula. Two relationships, E = I × R and P = I × E. A large family of questions collapses into arithmetic once you have them. Learn to rearrange them rather than memorising every variant.
  • Wavelength and frequency. Wavelength in metres = 300 ÷ frequency in MHz. This tells you instantly why a 20 m antenna is roughly 33 ft for a half wave, and it appears everywhere.
  • SWR and what it actually indicates. A mismatch between antenna and feedline impedance. Understand that 1:1 is ideal, that high SWR means reflected power and can cause a modern rig to fold back its output, and that a tuner masks a mismatch at the radio rather than fixing the antenna.
  • The band plan logic. Not every edge frequency — the structure. Which bands your class may use, where CW and digital live relative to phone, and why the sub-band boundaries fall where they do.
  • RF exposure and safety. Genuinely important, and the questions are mostly reasoning, not recall.
  • Basic propagation. Ionospheric layers, why 40 m works at night and 20 m in the day, what sporadic-E is. This is the most interesting material on the exam and it directly improves your operating.

Just drill these

Arbitrary values that carry no transferable insight. Spaced repetition handles them; do not burn comprehension effort here.

  • Specific frequency boundaries in MHz
  • Exact power limits per band and per class
  • Schematic symbol identification
  • Specific Part 97 section numbers and definitions
  • Colour codes and component value tables

Test-day tactics

Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank is a guaranteed zero; a guess among four is 25%.

Eliminate first, then choose. The pool has a recognisable style: one answer is usually obviously absurd, and a second is often a plausible-sounding distractor with a wrong unit or an order of magnitude off. Getting from four choices to two doubles your odds on anything you are unsure of.

Watch the units. A surprising number of near-misses are the right number in the wrong unit — mA versus A, kHz versus MHz, watts versus milliwatts. When a calculation answer looks right, check the exponent before you commit.

Flag and move on. Do not burn eight minutes on one question early. Mark it, finish the exam, come back. Later questions frequently jog the concept loose, and occasionally one question’s wording gives away another’s answer.

Do not second-guess at the end. Change an answer only if you can articulate why the new one is right — not because it “feels” better on a re-read. Unstructured second-guessing costs more marks than it saves.

Bring the boring things. Photo ID, your FRN, a pen, and a simple calculator. No phone at the desk.

Ask for the next element

When the VEs tell you that you passed, ask to attempt the next one. It is usually free, there is no penalty for failing, and the rules and safety material you just studied overlaps substantially with the next pool. People pass General on the spot this way every weekend.

If you fail

You can retake the same element immediately, in the same session, with a fresh random draw — most teams charge another session fee, so ask first. Otherwise, you have no waiting period at all; book the next session.

More usefully: a fail almost always traces to one or two topic groups, and the VE team can usually tell you which. Two focused days on those, and the retake is straightforward.
