POTA: Your First Activation

Parks on the Air is the best on-ramp to portable HF. What you need, how the ten-contact rule works, how to self-spot, and how to avoid the mistakes that end an activation early.

Parks on the Air took a simple idea — operate from a park, log contacts, get credit — and accidentally built the most welcoming corner of amateur radio. There are always hunters listening, the exchange is short, and an activation is a self-contained afternoon with a clear success condition.

It is also the single best answer to a noisy suburban lot or an HOA. Instead of fighting a 20 dB noise floor and a hidden attic wire, you drive fifteen minutes and put a full-size antenna in a tree over quiet ground. Operators who move to portable frequently find they never go back.

How it works

Two roles:

  • Activators operate from a registered park.
  • Hunters work them from home.

Every park has a reference — US-1234 — and to log a valid activation you need ten contacts from inside the park boundary on the same UTC day. Ten. That is the whole requirement, and on a reasonable afternoon on 20 or 40 m you will have them in twenty minutes.

Park-to-park contacts, where both stations are activating, count for both and are the currency of the hobby. Awards accumulate for parks activated, parks hunted, and various combinations, but the awards are not really the point — the point is a reason to go outside with a radio.

What you need

Radio

Anything portable. The obvious candidates are the Yaesu FT-891 (100 W, small, hungry), the Icom IC-705 (10 W, built-in battery, superb receiver), the Elecraft KX2/KX3, and the Xiegu G90 (20 W with a built-in tuner, inexpensive).

Power is not the constraint you think it is. 10 W into a good antenna in a quiet location routinely outperforms 100 W into a compromised antenna in a noisy one. QRP activations succeed constantly. Spend the weight budget on the antenna.

Antenna

The three that dominate for good reasons:

  • End-fed half-wave, 40–10 m, thrown over a branch with an arborist line. Single support, no tuner needed on the harmonic bands, packs into a pocket. The default.
  • Linked dipole — a dipole with connectors that let you shorten it per band. Slightly more efficient, slightly more fiddly, requires walking to the ends to change band.
  • Vertical with radials — a telescoping whip on a tripod with a few radials. The answer where there are no trees, which is more parks than you would expect.

A throw line and weight is the accessory that matters most. A 12 oz weight on 50 ft of arborist line gets a wire 30 feet up in one throw and turns antenna deployment from a twenty-minute struggle into a two-minute one.

Power

LiFePO4, not lead-acid. A 12 Ah LiFePO4 pack weighs about 3 lb, delivers nearly its full rated capacity, tolerates deep discharge, and lasts thousands of cycles. It will run a 100 W radio for a long afternoon of SSB, or a QRP radio for a weekend.

Bring more capacity than you think you need for your first few outings, until you learn your actual consumption.

The things people forget

A pen and paper log as backup. A chair. Coax you have actually tested. A spare set of connector adapters. Sunscreen, water, and bug spray — an activation is an outdoor event first and a radio event second.

Before you go

Confirm the park is a valid POTA reference on pota.app, and read the entry — some references have multiple separate units, and you must be inside the boundary of the one you claim.

Check the park’s own rules. Most public parks are entirely fine with a wire in a tree. Some require a permit for anything resembling an event; a few prohibit attaching anything to vegetation at all. State parks, national parks and wildlife refuges each have different policies. A phone call to the park office is five minutes and removes all doubt.

The site survey that saves your afternoon

Before you unpack, look up and around. Power lines are the obvious hazard and a wire antenna near one can be fatal — keep well clear, and never deploy where a falling antenna could reach a line. Then check for RF noise (park lighting and pumps are common offenders), foot traffic through your wire, and whether your chosen tree is actually reachable.

Have a backup band. If 20 m is closed when you arrive, you want to already know that 40 m is your fallback and that your antenna covers it.

Running the activation

  1. Set up and check SWR before transmitting in earnest. Antennas behave differently in a strange tree.
  2. Find a clear frequency, ask if it is in use, twice.
  3. Self-spot on pota.app. This is the mechanism that makes POTA work — hunters watch the spots page, and within a minute of posting you will have callers. Do not camp on a fixed “POTA frequency” hoping to be found; post where you actually are. Bring a phone with signal, or arrange to be spotted by a hunter.
  4. Call CQ with the context. “CQ POTA, CQ Parks on the Air, this is November Four Lima Lima Zulu, portable, US-1234.”
  5. Keep the exchange short. Call sign, signal report, park reference. Hunters are working a queue and so are you. Chat once the pileup thins.
  6. Log accurately. Call sign, UTC time, band, mode, and park-to-park references. Time accuracy matters: hunters’ logs must match yours.
  7. Re-spot when you change band or frequency. A stale spot sends people to an empty frequency.

When the callers stop, move bands and re-spot. A two-band activation frequently doubles the log.

Afterwards

Upload an ADIF log to pota.app. The site matches your log against hunters’ and credits both sides. Upload promptly — hunters watch for confirmation, and a log sitting on your laptop for three weeks helps nobody.

Also upload to LoTW if you use it. POTA contacts count for regular awards too.

Pack out everything, including wire offcuts and the throw weight you lost in the grass. The whole activity depends on park staff continuing to see hams as unobtrusive visitors, and one operator leaving a mess costs everyone.

Common first-activation failures

  • Not making ten contacts. Usually a dead band plus no self-spot. Spot yourself, and have a second band ready.
  • Arriving with untested gear. Set the entire station up in the garden first. A connector that does not fit is a much better discovery at home.
  • Dead battery. Test your actual runtime before it matters.
  • Logging in local time. POTA runs on UTC, and a mismatch means unmatched contacts for every hunter.
  • Setting up in the busiest spot in the park. A picnic area at noon on Saturday is a bad choice for a wire at head height. Find a quiet corner.
  • Being unfriendly to the curious. People will ask what you are doing. This is the single best recruiting moment the hobby gets — a two-minute explanation and letting someone listen has brought more people into amateur radio than any advertisement.
